EROS INTRODUCTION TEXT

In common language they are used to describe something that may cause sexual desire.
For the collective imagination an erotic image is distinguished from a pornographic one only for a conceptuality hidden behind it and for having been performed in a more elegant manner.

In reality the concept of Eros is totally different and much deeper.
Eros is described in Plato’s Symposium as a demon, a being halfway between human and divine, a vital force that serves as a link between the earthly and the spiritual dimensions. 
Eros is the love and the pursuit of beauty.

If Eros is initially felt for external beauty, for a single body, it later expands to a much bigger feeling that embraces all bodies.
 Through contemplation, he can even become love for inner beauty, for knowledge and the arts up until becoming love for beauty itself in its ideal.

Plato states that eros can help the soul to “remember” beauty in its
pure form and describes Eros in the Convivium and in the Symposium
as a particular type of attention. An attention for everything that is beautiful: people, but also things and ideas. Because in the frenzy of the contemporary world we are no longer aware, we don’t dwell more on
any of the beautiful things we are surrounded by. “Face the effect that beauty has on you”, Socrates sustained, “do not run away!” Stay there and become aware of what is happening to you.

If you can remain still, if you don’t escape, this strong emotion will guaranteed an immense growth.
At the beginning you feel taken by a sense of vertigo, but what is happening to you is actually a widening of horizons that are no longer limited to material and sensory things, but, from now on, become infinite. You begin to remember, until before birth, when you were aware and you knew the truth about everything.
Eros is always in the future, because loving is the desire to create something that does not yet exist; something that lays beyond the limited world described by the words in which we live as prisoners.

Eros projects us in a parallel dimension where everything is possible: Where things exist even if there are not yet words to describe them; where sounds exist even if the musical notes or the instruments we know could never reproduce them. As Plato suggests: “love is not love for something beautiful, but it is the creation of something beautiful”.
You can only love something that you miss. We never really love what we already possess, but we love what we still do not have and what we want to have in the future.
These photographs of mine are an expression of Eros: a search for beauty and love.

Thanks to the diptych, the use of two images, there’s the search for a narrative,
a story that I only partially narrate and which doesn’t have the pretension to provide answers but, if anything, has the goal of creating in whomever looks at them, some questions.
As in every love story there is a need to be at least in two. Here,
the imagination of those who look at these images, becomes the complementary element, the catalyst enzyme that allows love to happen.
I wish that through Eros and through beauty, we can stop looking for what we already know.
That we could finally discover the truth beyond the visible world; abandoning reality as we have learned it from others and finally create a dimension that is infinite and it is only ours.

Nel nostro linguaggio comune qualcosa di erotico è diventato qualcosa che causa un desiderio sessuale.
Per l’immaginario collettivo un’immagine erotica si discosta da una pornografica non soltanto per la sua contestualità ma anche per essere stata eseguita in maniera più raffinata.

In realtà il concetto di Eros è totalmente diverso e molto più profondo. Eros viene descritto nel Simposio di Platone come un demone, un essere
a metà strada fra ciò che è umano e ciò che è divino, una forza vitale che funge da tramite fra la dimensione terrena e quella spirituale.
Eros è amore e ricerca della bellezza.

Se Eros è in origine più sentito per la sua bellezza esteriore, per un corpo ad esempio, col tempo si allarga ad un sentimento molto più grande che abbraccia tutti i corpi e, attraverso la contemplazione, può divenire amore per la bellezza interiore, fino a divenire amore per la conoscenza, per le arti, giungendo alla bellezza stessa nel suo ideale.

Platone dice che eros può aiutare l’anima a “ricordare” la bellezza nella sua forma più pura e descrive Eros nel Convivio e nel Simposio come un particolare tipo di attenzione.
Un’attenzione verso tutto ciò che esiste di bello: persone, ma anche cose e idee.
Perché nella frenesia del mondo contemporaneo non vediamo più niente, non ci soffermiamo più sulle cose belle che ci circondano.

“Accorgiti di ciò che ti succede quando vedi qualcosa di bello” dice Socrate. Se guardi con sufficiente coraggio ti accorgi che la bellezza ti fa paura.
Perché la bellezza è più grande di tutto:
E’ aldilà di ogni cosa che noi possiamo conoscere di quella persona o di quell’oggetto ed è anche più’ grande di noi che lo guardiamo.
La bellezza è l’effetto che qualcuno o qualcosa di bello crea nella persona che lo guarda. “Di fronte all’effetto che la bellezza ha su di te,” dice Socrate: “non scappare!” Rimani dove sei e accorgiti fino in fondo di ciò che ti sta succedendo.

Se riesci a restare là, a non fuggire di fronte a questa forte emozione ti sarà garantita una crescita.
All inizio ti senti preso da un senso di vertigine , ma quello che ti sta accadendo è in realtà un ampliarsi degli orizzonti non più limitati alle cose materiali e sensoriali, ma, da ora in poi, infiniti.
Inizi a ricordare, fino a prima della nascita, quando conoscevi davvero tutto e sapevi la verità su ogni cosa. Eros è sempre nel futuro, perché amare è desiderio di creare qualcosa che ancora non esiste, qualcosa che sta al di là del mondo limitato descritto dalle parole nel quale viviamo prigionieri.
Eros ci proietta in una dimensione parallela dove tutto è possibile:
Dove esistono cose anche se non ci sono ancora parole che le descrivono; dove esistono suoni anche se le note musicali o gli strumenti che conosciamo non potrebbero mai riprodurli.

Come suggerisce Platone: “ l’amore non è l’amore per qualcosa di bello, ma è la creazione di qualcosa di bello”.
Si può’ amare infatti soltanto qualcosa di cui si sente la mancanza.
 Non si ama mai ciò che già possediamo, ma si ama ciò che ancora non abbiamo e che vogliamo possedere anche in futuro.
 Queste mie fotografie sono espressione di Eros: sono ricerca di bellezza e di amore. Grazie al dittico, all’uso di due immagini, c’è la ricerca di una narrativa, di una storia che io racconto soltanto in parte e che non ha la pretesa di dare delle risposte ma, semmai, ha l’obbiettivo di creare in chi le guarda, delle domande.
 Come in ogni amore c’è il bisogno di essere almeno in due.
Ecco che, la fantasia di chi guarda queste immagini, diventa l’elemento complementare, l’enzima catalizzatore che permette all’amore di accadere. Mi auguro che attraverso Eros e attraverso la bellezza si possa smettere di cercare quello che già sappiamo.
Che si possa finalmente scoprire la verità al di là del mondo visibile; abbandonare la realtà così come l’ abbiamo imparata dagli altri e creare finalmente una dimensione infinita che sia soltanto nostra.
